Ask any number of Ultimate Fighter alumni what the toughest part of the show is and there’s a good chance the bulk of the bunch won’t refer to the in-ring suffering but rather the strain of being away from family/friends. The current season is no exception with two men showing the effects of missing their loved ones on the most recent episode, albeit in very different ways.
Team Nelson’s Julian Lane was shown breaking down emotionally last week after losing a hard-fought effort against Bristol Marunde and nearly found a way to reunite himself with them after trying to pick a fight with cast-mate Matt Secor. The conflict came after Secor insulted Lane, teasing him for having picked Marunde as his adversary, and then passed gas in his direction. Lane wasted little time reacting, opting to get in Secor’s face and threaten him with a knockout blow. The two were eventually pulled apart and the unsanctioned scrap was avoided.
Meanwhile, Team Carwin’s Igor Araujo was shown to be missing his wife and child who happened to be turning two during the fighter’s time in the Ultimate Fighter house. Fortunately, for him at least, the Brazilian was able to channel the energy and perform at a high-enough level against Nic Herron-Webb in the episode’s attached bout. Araujo earned a Majority Decision over Herron-Webb, dominating the first and somehow scraping by in a very-close second stanza.
“I felt really happy because I won my fight on my son’s birthday. It was really strange fighting in the TUF gym, with Dana White watching, I felt so much pressure. I should have finished Nic, but I didn?t and I didn?t get the $5,000 bonus because of it,” said Araujo after the fight. “I respect Nic, he is a nice guy, he is young and a tough fighter, but in this situation being away from my family was my biggest opponent at that time.?
