Jon Fitch comes through at UFC 153 with Fight of the Night honors

Welterweight Jon Fitch was much more vocal than normal leading up to last night?s scrap with Erick Silva at UFC 153. The former title-contender spoke openly about his new emphasis on turning in exciting efforts rather than the plodding victories he?s often associated with, as well as his need for money after being sidelined for a good part of the year due to injury.

Come showtime, the 24-4-1 Fitch lived up to both expectations, taking an aggressive approach in his bout with Silva that not only netted him a win but an extra $70,000 as well. The match-up was named the show?s Fight of the Night, resulting in Silva receiving $70,000 too for his role in the rumble.

Fitch Talks Financial Woes, Need for a Big Win

Submission of the Night went to a man well-versed in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as legendary grappler Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira exited the evening with the award as well as the attached cash. The distinction served as the icing on the cake of a feel-good moment, coming after a ten-month break from competition due to a broken arm he sustained in a loss to Frank Mir.

Finally, Rony ?Jason? followed up his season-winning showing on TUF Brasil with the distinction Knockout of the Night. ?Jason? ? nicknamed such based on his preference to wear a hockey mask down to the cage ? flattened Sam Sicilia in the second round of their preliminary pairing to earn the honor. The win marked the young Brazilian?s seventh straight but was only the fourth strike-based stoppage of his career.
