It stood to reason that the UFC on Fuel 5 bout between Matt Wiman and Paul Sass might result in a Submission of the Night nod. After all, Sass was unbeaten entering the bout with twelve tap-outs in his thirteen total victories and viewed as one of the lightweight division?s top grapplers. However, to the shock of many, it was actually Wiman who brought home the award after avoiding a number of attempts from Sass to eventually lock up an Armbar of his won.
The win scored Wiman an extra $40,000 on top of his regularly contracted rate as well as marked his fifth win in six scraps.
Meanwhile, Fight of the Night was awarded to headlining heavyweight Stipe Miocic-Stefan Struve for their evenly-matched melee. While Struve ultimately finished Miocic off in the second frame, both men received $40,000 for their collective performance.
Last but not least, bantamweight Brad Pickett earned Knockout of the Night with a perfectly-timed uppercut. The shot floored foe Yves Jabouin, giving ?One Punch? Pickett a chance to spring in and drop the hammer to net his seventh career strike-based stoppage. He too won $40,000 for the honor.
