Ultimate Fighter 17 tryouts draw Derek Brunson, other Strikeforce/UFC/Bellator veterans

Though the new season of the Ultimate Fighter only started airing this past Friday night, the UFC is already actively working on getting things lined up for the organization?s follow-up effort slated for Spring 2013. Casting for TUF 17 took place this week where more than a hundred middleweights/light heavyweights descended on Las Vegas in hopes of earning a spot among the final 32.

While TUF has typically featured unknowns in the past (minus the ?Comeback? season), this time around a number of notable veterans showed up with the goal of getting a shot at a run in the UFC. Perhaps the most recognizable of the group was Derek Brunson, a highly-touted prospect whose hype took a hit with back-to-back losses.

MMAJunkie was first to reveal Brunson?s participation along with a few other fighters who have called the UFC or Strikeforce home in the past. Others on scene included Jay Silva and Nissen Osterneck, as well as Bellator veterans like Dan Spohn and Anthony Lapsley.

Brunson holds an overall record of 9-2 and is coming off an opening round knockout to former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza. Prior to that, the middleweight was on the wrong end of a controversial decision defeat to TUF 3 winner Kendall Grove after accepting the fight on short notice. Seven of Brunson?s wins have involved some form of finish with three of his total victories coming under the Strikeforce banner.
