Fernandes revealed that he hadn't signed a contract with the UFC, deeming the terms of the contract unacceptable after negotiations. However, according to a report from Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com, Fernandes actually verbally agreed to sign with the UFC, prompting their announcement of a bout at UFC 149. However, he then received a more lucrative offer from ONE FC shortly thereafter.
Per the report, Fernandes is now waiting to make a decision until his pregnant wife has their child, as she wanted him to take his time to weigh the options. She is seven months along, and Fernandes will reportedly decide his future after their child's birth. That means he could still be headed to the UFC, but he won't be ready for a summer fight in either organization.
Penick's Analysis: That's a sensible approach for Fernandes to take in regards to his options here. He has to make the right decision monetarily for his family, and with his wife so close to her due date it does make more sense to hold off on a fight right now. He can wait until the child is born, then decide whether he can take less money from the UFC, or whether he can get them to up their offer. If not, he can fight for ONE FC for more money. Fans can hope to still see him in the Octagon, but a decision won't be made anytime soon.
