UFC's Johny Hendricks makes himself clear: "I'm not going to fight unless it's for a belt"

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_84.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Since the conclusion of UFC 154 a couple of weeks ago, there's been plenty of discussion about what Johny Hendricks should do next, depending on what happens with UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre. However, despite a non-stop stream of speculation, Hendricks is very clear in his stance on what his plan is moving forward.

"I'm not going to fight unless it's for a belt," Hendricks said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "Nothing else matters but the belt. My last three fights were guys in the top five, and I finished two of those three fights. I stated my claim. My stock's really high right now, and the only thing left is to get a shot at that belt."

"I really want a belt. They don't come around that often, and I feel like I've done enough to earn a shot, and that's pretty much all I'm thinking of right now. I'm training for a five-round fight, and that's it."

Unfortunately for Hendricks, GSP's camp has two other fights on their minds at the moment. The Anderson Silva fight is still at the forefront of the conversation, and GSP's head trainer Firas Zahabi said this week he believed Nick Diaz deserves the No. 1 contender slot over Hendricks. It's that latter point that Hendricks can't wrap his head around.

"He's trying to keep money from my kids," Hendricks said. "If I win that belt and take it from him, my life changes. He's trying to not give me the fair shot. That's crazy to me to think this guy is trying to control my future. That makes me want to win that much even more. Here is a guy is trying to pull out a curveball saying, 'We really don't think we can win with this guy, but we think we can beat Nick Diaz.' That's what it sounds like to me."

But Hendricks remains confident he'll be fighting St-Pierre in his next fight, and that's how he's preparing as 2013 approaches.

"I think I'm going to be fighting GSP in six months ? April or May," he said. "I want GSP, and nothing else matters. Nobody else is in the equation in my mind. But hypothetically, as long as it takes (to get GSP is how long I'll wait). You only get so many opportunities to fight at the top level and stay at the top level."

"I can't keep fighting and being the No. 1 contender for years. There has to be a time to take a stand, and I feel like now is that time."

Penick's Analysis: At this stage, if the GSP-Silva fight is what happens, Hendricks has nothing to pin on GSP. It won't be St-Pierre not trying to give him a fair shot, as that's the fight the UFC has talked about, and the fight pushed for by Anderson Silva. If GSP's camp pushes for Diaz over him, he's got more reason to complain, but at this stage, he may unfortunately just be the odd man out in the picture despite his impressive run. He can wait for the shot if he likes, but more than likely it's not coming for a considerable time.

Yves Edwards vs. Jeremy Stephens rebooked for UFC on FOX 5

After their initial meeting was infamously canceled last minute, lightweights Yves Edwards and Jeremy Stephens will give it another go at UFC on FOX 5.

As MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier today, Edwards' original opponent, John Cholish, recently scratched due to a groin injury.

In his place steps Stephens, whose incarceration canceled their planned bout this past month at UFC on FX 5.

The retired Stephan Bonnar suspended one year for PED usage

Stephan Bonnar announced his retirement last week, but soon after, it was announced he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs for his loss to Anderson Silva. Dave Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites for his UFC 153 loss to Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera.

Because the fights were held in Brazil, which has no regulatory commission, the fights were overseen by UFC vice president of regulatory affairs. He suspended Bonnar for a year, while Herman's punishment will be decided later this week and will involve some sort of treatment.

OK, but what's the point of such a suspension at this point? This was Bonnar's second time testing positive. The $5,000 fine and nine-month suspension he received last time didn't deter him from taking banned substances again. Now, he has to serve a suspension while retired. How does this stop him from using again if he does come back -- as so many fighters do -- or keep other fighters from using?

For Herman, Ratner did say marijuana is treated differently than performance enhancers:

"We feel very strongly that there's a big difference between PED's [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana," Ratner said to MMA Fighting. "We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it.

Considering two states changed their laws on marijuana on Tuesday, it's not surprising to see the UFC has a more lax attitude about the drug.

But performance enhancers can not just change the outcome of a fight. They can seriously injure a fighter, both for the one taking it and for the unwitting opponent. When a fighter blows weight, he or she quite often has to give up part of his or her purse. That money goes to the opponent. However, take a PED, and the opponent gets nothing?

Merely suspending a retired fighter and not punishing with a substantial fine is not enough for the UFC to stop future usage.

Erick Silva says he had to cut 15 lbs. in the day before UFC 153 weigh-ins

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_82.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Last month at UFC 153, Erick Silva saw his movement up the welterweight ladder brought to a halt by Jon Fitch, who beat him up in the second and third rounds of their fight to hand him his first true UFC loss.

Silva was worn down as the fight went on, a result of Fitch's relentless and grinding attack, no doubt, but he was also hindered by a larger weight cut than he was used to, as he explained to Fighter's Only that he had to drop nearly 15 lbs. the day before weigh-ins.

"I won?t permit it to happen again," he said. "I will be attentive to the weight, I will work it well. I won?t have much on me by the end of the year. In the last fight, I thought that it would be better to get heavier in the final stages of training but afterwards I realized that it ended up making me more slow and tired. Now this is going to be a whole new ball game."

Penick's Analysis: The overly aggressive weight cut certainly didn't help him deal with Fitch, but the relentless offense Fitch hit him with would have drained most anybody. Still, it's an important lesson to learn for a young fighter, and he seems to understand that's not the type of cut that will have him at his best come fight day. So if that improves him on the whole moving forward, it's a good thing.

When a staph infection recently caused an ensuing skin infection for Jake Rosenbaum, it wasn't hard to spot.

Demetrious Johnson?s first title defense will happen at UFC on Fox 6

Chicago will host its first UFC title fight since UFC 90. On "UFC Insider," it was reported flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his belt for the first time at UFC on Fox 6 on Jan. 26. He'll fight John Dodson at the United Center.

Johnson's last fight was a five-round win over Joseph Benavidez. He'll take on Dodson, a Jackson's MMA-trained winner of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Joining them on the card will be Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis. After a long layoff due to surgery and illness, Pettis will fight close to home. The United Center is just 95 miles from Pettis' training home in Milwaukee.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson also says that he is on the card, though that has not been confirmed:

Luke Rockhold off Strikeforce event with wrist injury

Strikeforce: Champions just took another hit. The Jan. 12 event, which is rumored to be Strikeforce's last, lost Luke Rockhold to injury. The middleweight champion has a wrist injury and had to withdraw from his bout with Lorenz Larkin.

Larkin was apparently not happy about Rockhold's decision to withdraw, because he sent several tweets ripping Rockhold.

The two were supposed to meet at the Nov. 3 Strikeforce event. Rockhold withdrew from that bout with a wrist injury, and the event was scrapped.

The Rockhold injury is another blow to Strikeforce. They canceled event in September and November, leading to rumors about their demise. Having a event called "Champions" without many champions doesn't inspire much confident about their future.
