While the world awaits the upcoming championship battle between heavyweight kingpin Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem at UFC 146, a grander picture is beginning to appear quite clear. May 26 will not only determine who holds the belt come May 27, it will also provide the division?s next contender.

Before dos Santos and Overeem invade the spotlight in the evening?s main event, former champions Cain Velasquez (9-1) and Frank Mir (16-5) will wage war in a bid for an immediate title challenge. That?s right, whoever emerges from this fantastic co-headliner with a victory will fight the winner of dos Santos versus Overeem.

Frank Mir is currently riding a three fight win streak, having toppled Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Roy Nelson and Mirko Crocop in his last three outings. Only Nelson survived to see the final bell sound; Crocop was rendered unconscious by a knee late in their 2010 tussle, while Nogueira, who Mir fought most recently at UFC 140, exited the cage with another loss on his record and a broken arm for his troubles.

Velasquez in contrast will be looking to rebound from his first professional defeat; a knockout loss to now-champion Junior dos Santos, suffered at UFC on FOX 1. Prior to the defeat Velasquez bullied his way through the heavyweight ranks to capture divisional gold, beating noteworthy foes Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cheick Kongo in the process.

UFC 146 takes place on May 26. Playing host to the event will be the UFC?s go-to venue, the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
