Melvin Guillard and Khabib Nurmagomedov take decisions in to round out UFC 148 prelims
The non-PPV portion of UFC 148 finished with two more decisions, meaning there were no stoppages on the preliminary card of Saturay night's bouts in Las Vegas.
Melvin Guillard looked close to finishing Fabricio Camoes in the first round of their bout, but the horn sounded before their fight was stopped. Guillard held on to win the decision 30-27 on all three cards. Khabib Nurmagomedov took a tight decision from Gleison Tibau, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Invicta FC, Sara McMann and Women?s MMA: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.29.12
A weekend without the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator can often mean a weekend without happiness. Okay, not really. But if that actually is the case with you, please, get help. Or get a hobby or something. Anyway, there were no offerings from the aforementioned titans of mixed martial arts; however, last night the Invicta Fighting Championships had its second installment, and in terms of high-level MMA action, it pretty much rocked. Therein lies where this morning's news is coming from.
- Unless you were one of the lucky few to make the trek out to Kansas City to see the event in person, you were forced to watch Invicta FC via the free stream broadcast over the organization's website. You were also forced to deal with a stream that was virtually non-existent for the first half of the fourteen-bout card, which, according to the event promoter Shannon Knapp, was attributed to crashed servers. But hey, it was free, and when the feed was strong, we got to see some exciting stuff, like Strikeforce veterans Amanda Nunes and Liz Carmouche kick butt and take names. Reviews of the event can be found here, here and here. Personally, I rated it four out of five mouthpieces.

- Olympic Freestyle wrestling Silver Medalist Sara McMann came away with another win in Invicta FC's thrilling main event, bringing her unblemished record up to 6-0 with a unanimous decision win over the ultra-tough Shayna Baszler. The bout was a close one and hotly contested right up to the final bell; in the waning seconds, Baszler rocked McMann with strikes, and McMann was moments away from doing "the Worm". But the bell rang and it went to the judges, and that was all she wrote. The victory puts McMann in line for a shot at the Invicta FC bantamweight title, which is vacant and waiting for someone worthy to claim it.

- With over 200,000 purported Internet viewers, the first Invicta FC event was considered a success, and last night's numbers have to at least be in that ballpark. So where does that put the current state of female MMA? Probably in a very good place, especially with Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey's step up in exposure and Invicta FC already planning a third event. Say what you will about women fighting, but there's a market for it ? and right now, that market is strong.

- Yesterday was UFC president Dana White's birthday. I hope that in honor of the occasion you all cornered your pets and screamed at them "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?" I know I did.

Eddie Alvarez to take final fight on Bellator contract on October 15
Had he done the latter, he would have triggered a negotiation period with Bellator, then a matching period, at which time he would be free to negotiate with the UFC. Well, he's opted to speed up that process by fighting at least once more in the organization.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Alvarez has agreed to fight on October 15, fulfilling the final fight on his contract. His opponent has not been signed, but Bellator is expected to announce it in the coming days. The event will take place at Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Following that final fight, Alvarez will enter his matching period with the organization. That means he's free to field offers, but Bellator has a right to match the contract within a three month span. They had that right with former Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard, opting not to match the terms offered by the UFC.
Penick's Analysis: Well, if the UFC offers Alvarez terms in short order, and Bellator decides not to match them, Alvarez could potentially debut in the UFC as early as the end of the year. He may not want to turn around quite that quickly, but he realistically could be in the UFC by January. That's an exciting prospect for his fans, who have wanted to see how he can perform against the top competition in the sport. And though he did suffer a loss to Michael Chandler last fall, he can still prove himself as a top competitor in the lightweight division if he heads to the Octagon.

Michael Bisping, Brian Stann and Alan Belcher angle for next fights
As many dreamed of an Anderson Silva/Jon Jones superfight, middleweights asked for fights that would get them a step closer to challenging Silva for his belt.
Michael Bisping started the ball rolling by calling out Alan Belcher on "UFC Tonight." After Bisping's asked for the fight, Belcher responded.
"When someone says, 'Let's do this if you've got the balls to fight me,' and I say, 'OK,' and call (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva right away, let's make the fight happen," Belcher today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "I don't see why it's already been two days and there's no date."
Then Brian Stann got in on the fun by saying he wanted to fight Bisping. Stann was supposed to fight Hector Lombard in August, but had to pull out because of a shoulder injury. As his shoulder heals, Stann is looking forward to his next fight. He wants Bisping.
"I just think that the storyline would garner more attention between me and Bisping. I always want to fight guys that are ranked ahead of me, and right now, that's where Bisping is. He's very close to a title shot. I've done all the things necessary to improve my overall game," Stann said. "Now's my time. I'm not getting any younger. I want to fight for the title, and right now, to get to that title, Bisping is one of the guys you have to get through."
With Stann and Bisping now looking to fight, Belcher aimed higher. His sights are set on UFC gold. He used his Twitter account to encourage followers to tweet UFC president Dana White about a title shot. Using the hashtag #Belcher4champ, fans filled White's Twitter mentions with pleas on Belcher's behalf.
Now it's your turn to play matchmaker. Do you want to see Bisping, Belcher or Stann fight Silva? Or should two of them face off for the right to fight Silva? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Anderson Silva's manager wants GSP fight, third Rich Franklin bout over Chris Weidman and others
"I don't think any opponent in that category is a joke," Silva's manager Ed Soares said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "I just think that some of his opponents just aren't as attractive. When I look at Weidman, I think he's a very talented guy. He's got a bright future. But when I look at it, he's 9-0. Anderson has got double the wins he has in his career in the UFC. So I just don't see the value of being able to fight a guy like this right now. That's my opinion."
Soares actually places more value on a third fight with Rich Franklin, the man Silva took the belt from in 2006, and subsequently defeated a second time a year later. With Franklin returning to the middleweight division, Soares believes he's got a better case than some of the other names being floated out there.
"The only guy that Rich Franklin has ever lost to at 185 pounds is Anderson," Soares said. "So when you look at the 185-pound division, he's definitely up in the mix as far as a contender. I think [Silva would] be interested in fighting Franklin again, just simply because he respects Rich a lot, and he feels that Rich was the guy that gave him the opportunity to fight for the belt."
Outside of that, there remains one fight Soares says Silva has been interested in for some time: a super-fight against UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre. Of course, St-Pierre is on the sidelines until November, and has a fight lined up with Carlos Condit already. Still, that's a bout Silva's apparently got on his mind.
"It's not an easy situation," Soares said. "The middleweight division is a little bit complicated right now. But who am I to sit here and say who they should fight? I'm just saying that as far as the biggest fights go, I see a potential fight with Georges St-Pierre being a big fight."
Penick's Analysis: This is just Soares talking and stirring the pot a bit. It's something he likes to do in between fights, and while they're giving this opinion now, they'll ultimately go along with whatever fight the UFC is looking to put together. A fight with Weidman isn't as huge as a bout against Georges St-Pierre, but that GSP fight isn't going to come together anytime soon. St-Pierre has at least two fights lined up at 170 lbs., if not three. If he gets past Condit, he'll have the winner of Martin Kampmann vs. Johny Hendricks, then likely a fight with Nick Diaz if Diaz returns to action after his year-long suspension. The superfight with Silva has simply looked like it will not happen for some time now, so Silva may just need to move on. Of course, they could also just tell Kampmann or Hendricks "too bad," and go with Silva-GSP should St-Pierre defeat Condit.

HANSEN: A Strikeforce Flight of Fancy - From Precedent to Prescient With Fight Bookings
Last week, MMA Junkie reported that former UFC heavyweight champion and current MMA vagabond Tim Sylvia had signed with Strikeforce, and that Sylvia would be Cormier's final Strikeforce opponent. Predictably, the most common reaction to this news was
So again, we were left to wonder; who's next? (I already apologized to Bill Goldberg, doing so again would count as groveling)
On Tuesday night as I was doing show prep for the MMATorch Tuesday Night Livecast, for a brief two seconds the name Frank Mir popped into my little brain, but due to him being in the UFC I disregarded that thought and didn't think about it again (and go ahead, prove I didn't think of it first). At least, I didn't think about Mir vs. Cormier again until John Morgan of USA Today Sports reported that Frank Mir had signed to fight Daniel Cormier for Cormier's last fight. Cormier's fight with Mir will take place at a yet to be announced Strikeforce show in either October or November.
So now that the precedent has been set, we will of course be seeing the (almost) best that the UFC has to offer come flooding into the Strikeforce
Okay, maybe not. Okay, definitely not. But it's fun to think about the possibilities, no? Between Melendez, Marquardt, Rockhold, and Josh Barnett (who is supposed to have one remaining Strikeforce fight), there are a ton of intriguing fights that could be made. Even though none of these fights are going to happen, let's look at the three most intriguing (hypothetical) crossover fights for Melendez, Marquardt, Rockhold, and Barnett.
Josh Barnett
Barnett supposedly has one fight left on his Strikeforce deal. The odds of him ever again fighting in the UFC seem to be thin. Pretty much, Zuffa will want to get as much money out of him as possible before they let him go to coax Fedor out of retirement.
1.) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: For those of you reading this column who wonder why the word PRIDE is capitalized and say to yourself, "Bono didn't capitalize Pride, so why do all these UFC people do it?" Nogueira and Barnett have already fought twice in Japan for this little company called PRIDE, splitting two fights. Nogueira's on the shelf still rehabbing a broken wing, but should be ready to return soon. Nogueira's a big named special attraction fighter, and is just the type of fighter that the UFC might be willing to lend out to Strikeforce.
2.) Alistair Overeem: Despite Barnett and Overeem fighting in PRIDE at the same times, their paths never crossed due to Barnett being a heavyweight and Overeem being a rail thin flyweight (pre-horsemeat). Overeem is currently sitting on the sidelines due to a urine test showing him with an unusually high ratio of testosterone to epitesterone (read, he pissed hot) which led to him being denied a license to fight in the state of Nevada. What better way for Dana White to send a message that they're serious about cleaning up the drug culture that is pervasive in MMA by forcing him to return from whence he came against a very dangerous (and super duper clean) opponent in Josh Barnett. The odds of Barnett and Overeem being willing to submit to VADA testing like B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald? Negative eleven billion infinity percent.
3.) Mark Hunt: The UFC doesn't want to see the Twitter hashtag #RallyForHunt come into vogue once again, so what better way to kill it off than to have Barnett mangle Hunt's arm once more, just like he did when they first fought in 2006 in PRIDE (there's those damn caps again. Someone needs to go back to the year 1983 and tell Bono that his Caps Lock button is active!).
4.) Cheick Kongo: And then after the fight, when Barnett and Cormier leave Strikeforce, Kongo can stay in Strikeforce...
Luke Rockhold
I for one think Jacare is going to beat Rockhold when they rematch in a few month time. That notwithstanding, other than Jacare there's no one in Strikeforce's once vaunted middleweight division except for one Rockhold and Jacare.
The criterion change for the remaining divisions, because the heavyweights that would go over to fight Barnett are going to Strikeforce for just a one-off fight, and then returning (presumably) from whence they came. But for 185, 170, and 155, even if this imaginary precedent has been set by Frank Mir, there's also a skosh of reality that needs to be applied here, right?
1.) Mamed Khalidov: See? He's not even under contract to the UFC at all. I'm staying in the realm of reality. For now. But Khalidov was recently in contract negotiations with the UFC, only to have his management publicly insult the contract terms as laughable. However, unlike the UFC, Strikeforce has a history of laughably lavish, contracts. So as long as Zuffa, I mean Forza management can channel their inner-Coker, Khalidov makes all the
2.) Mark Munoz: Munoz's name far outreaches his accomplishments in this sport, which makes him completely expendable to the UFC and their suddenly compelling middleweight division. At the same time, he'd be extremely viable to the Strikeforce middleweight division. Speaking just for myself, and for every human being ever born or yet to be born, I really don't need to see Rockhold vs. Jacare VII sometime in the year 2014. Bring Munoz over, let him get a meaningless win over Tim Kennedy, and then get him in the three man perpetual motion title machine.
3.) Jorge Santiago: We're digging outside the UFC again, because anyone currently in the UFC's middleweight division that can hang with Luke Rockhold doesn't deserve the career crushing demotion to Strikeforce. Santiago clearly can't hang with the top tier of the UFC's middleweight division, but there's no reason he should be relegated to fighting on
Nathan Marquardt
Marquardt brings a different dynamic to the mix here. Marquardt is the best fighter in Strikeforce's remaining divisions, so the allure of fighting Marquardt might be enough of an inducement to get an elite welterweight who isn't going to sniff a UFC title shot anytime soon to see Strikeforce as something less than a slap in the face.
1.) Thiago Alves: Alves is the exact reason I wrote that last paragraph. He's got a name, he's got a long resume, and he's not sniffing a UFC title shot unless he wins like nine fights in a row, starting right now. And who exactly wouldn't want to watch Marquardt vs. Alves? I'm not an Alves guy, not even slightly, and I'd drop everything to watch that fight.
2.) Josh Koscheck: Koscheck will be fighting Jake Ellenberger on September 1. Assuming Koscheck loses that fight (he'll lose), he'll never come within 42 miles of a UFC title shot, and might not even be allowed in the same state as any future UFC Welterweight Championship fight. By now you should be noticing a trend; lots of veterans with big names and recent losses, with no shot at being in the UFC title chase ever again. If Koscheck loses to Ellenberger on September 1, that description will be next to Koscheck's entry in the next Webster's Dictionary.
3.) Jon Fitch: Nathan Marquardt is one of very few fighters who is in an exciting fight each and every time they fight. That's just the type of guy Fitch needs to be paired with (Aaron Simpson vs. Jon Fitch? Puh-leeze, just shoot me int he face with a ray-gun). Not to mention that even if Fitch wins his next five fights, he won't be getting a title fight. After all, after he lost to GSP in 2008, he won five in a row and didn't get anywhere near GSP for a rematch. Send him down and let Marquardt carry him to an exciting fight; one that Fitch could very well win, too.
Gilbert Melendez
Eventually Gilbert Melendez is going to come into a fight completely uninterested, unmotivated, unfocussed and will get himself knocked out. And while one cannot blame him for taking Josh Thomson and Pat Healy lightly, a loss is a loss and the entire world will forget he even exists after this happens. Melendez chose to re-sign with Strikeforce last year because he was comfortable being a highly paid big fish in a small pond. But now that the pond has been completely dredged, he's flopping around like he's in a Faith No More video (yes, I'm nearing 40; Shut up). Melendez needs fresh lightweight blood, and fast.
1.) Eddie Alvarez This is so easy. Alvarez is likely to be a free agent after his Bellator contract runs out in the fall. Also likely: the sun rising in the east.
2.) Eddie Alvarez Alvarez vs. Melendez was long rumoured a year or two ago, back in the
3.) Eddie Alvarez What? You thought I was gonna say Clay Guida?

Strikeforce?s Lorenz Larkin drops to knees and begs for bonuses after win
After winning a decision over Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Kennedy vs. Rockhold on Saturday night, Lorenz Larkin asked UFC president Dana White for a favor. During the postfight interview, Larkin got down on his knees and asked commentator Mauro Ranallo to join him there. Larkin then begged for equality among fighters, and asked that Strikeforce fighters receive fight night bonuses, like their UFC counterparts.
"We're your family, too," Larkin said.
Five and six-figure fight night bonuses are a norm for UFC fights. Bonuses are given out for the best submission, knockout and fight from each event. The extra money can turn out to be a financial boon for fighters. UFC heavyweight Pat Barry was six days from eviction and surviving on ketchup packets and rice when two bonuses for one fight came in.
[Also: Nate Marquardt KOs Tyron Woodley for Strikeforce welterweight title]
Though Strikeforce is also owned by Zuffa, the company which owns the UFC, the two groups are operated differently. Several UFC events are held every quarter, giving UFC fighters two or three fights a year. Strikeforce fighters are often waiting for months and months for their bouts.
Tim Kennedy, one of Saturday night's main eventers, waited a year for his bout, despite having no injuries holding him out of competition. Considering fighters only receive purses when they fight, how often they fight affects how much money they make.
Strikeforce fighter Tarec Saffiedine tweeted his support of Larkin, saying, "Ooooohhh yeaahh BONUSES! Thx u lorenz!"
UFC champion Georges St-Pierre once famously dropped to his knees in the cage to beg for a title shot. Larkin used the same ploy while pointing out it's not even about getting his own bonus, but it is about all fighters being treated fairly. It's sad that he even has to go to such lengths.
