Roy Nelson?s Beard has plenty to say
Roy Nelson got a chance to speak at Thursday's UFC 146 press conference, but his beard remained silent. That is, until now. In a Cagewriter exclusive, Roy Nelson's Beard (RNB) spoke about its past, future, and what it brings to Nelson's game.
Cagewriter: How are you feeling today?
RNB: Good. Full. Ready to take on Dave Herman.
CW: How long have you been with Roy?
RNB: Well, I've been a part of his life for some time, but it was just in the past year or so that Roy really let me shine. He and I push each other to make each other great. It's truly a symbiotic relationship.
CW: What do you bring to his MMA game?
RNB: What DON'T I bring to his game? Striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, I taught him all of that. When he and his coaches come up with his game plan, they turn to me for advice. TKOing "Cro Cop"? That was all me.
CW: So then do you also take the blame for the fact he's lost three of his last four bouts?
RNB: Well, we're a team. We lose together, y'know? It's not just Roy out there. It's me, the belly, the mullet.
CW: Is there ever a rivalry between you?
RNB: Well, I'll let you in on a secret. The belly is TOTALLY jealous of me. He always used to get all the attention, but since Roy has been getting in better shape, he's lost prominence. Now it's all eyes on me.
CW: Has Roy talked to you about the future? Will he definitely keep you around or is there discussion of ... a razor?
RNB? Why would you ask such a thing? That's sick. Seriously. A razor? To what? Shave me off? You don't shave me off. You don't get rid of a glorious beard like this one. Are you crazy. I'm done. Interview's over.
CW: Well, thanks for your time.

Details on plea agreement for UFC Champ Jon Jones on DWI charge
Jones' guilty plea will see him avoid any jail time from the arrest, though there are several caveats to his plea agreement that he must abide by. During Fuel TV's "UFC Tonight" broadcast on Tuesday night, more information was given on just what that plea bargain entails (transcribed by MMAMania.com):
"What's next for Jon is he has to stay out of trouble, between now and June 19. He also has to take an alcohol evaluation between now and June 19. On June 19, he is due to appear back in Binghamton City court. That is when he will receive his plea bargain. Now, his plea bargain is essentially this: He must stay out of trouble for a year. He must undergo these sort of alcohol sensitivity classes, to understand what could happen to a victim if they do drive while impaired. He must also pay any damages that his accident caused. On top of that, he must also put something in his car called an 'ignition interlock device,' which essentially means that between now and the next year, any time he drives his car, he will have to take a breathalyzer test to make sure he is not driving while impaired. He has also had his license suspended indefinitely. If he does agree to all this, and everything's good between now and June 19, he will not face any further charges. He won't go to jail, he just has to pay a very small fine, a maximum of $1,500."
Penick's Analysis: Jones will likely get his license reinstated whenever the ignition interlock device is put into his car. Ultimately, he will be getting off a bit light as it's his first offense and no one was injured in this crash, and hopefully this is something he does learn from so it doesn't happen ever again. For the average person in this situation, this would be a more trying situation monetarily, as it's not cheap to have the ignition interlock device installed and at least in some states I understand there's a monthly fee the individual must pay as well. That on top of a fine and attorney's fees can add up, but for someone of Jones' stature it's not as much of a hit. Hopefully that doesn't mean the lesson goes unlearned, and I don't think it will, but he absolutely needs to make some changes in his life to avoid this situation again.

Amateur MMA fighter dies following unregulated event in South Dakota
Now, an amateur fighter in South Dakota has died following a bout at an unregulated show in the state, according to a report from the Rapid City Journal. However, this death may or may not have been caused by anything that happened in the fight itself.
26-year-old Dustin Jensen, fighting in his fifth amateur fight since starting in the sport a year ago, was submitted at a "RingWars" event on May 18 in what was described as a typical MMA fight, with no over the top violence or anything out of the ordinary.
Following the fight, he watched two more bouts before going into the locker room, where he was found after suffering a seizure. No medical personnel were on site, so an EMT was called and he was rushed to the hospital. At Rapid City Regional Hospital, it was determined he had increased pressure on his brain, and he was put into a medically induced coma to undergo surgery to relieve said pressure. Unfortunately, the surgery could not save Jensen's life.
"He did not wake up after the surgery and was declared brain dead at 10:23 a.m.," Jensen's mother-in-law, Violet Schieman, said. ?He remained on life support until his organs were donated."
"Doctors have watched the video and said it shouldn't have happened," she continued. "They said the fight may have triggered a brain aneurysm, but it was not overly violent."
The lack of a regulating body in South Dakota is a cause of concern for those participating in these events. Josh Usera, lead MMA trainer at Dynamic Martial Arts in Rapid City, commented on the necessity of regulation.
"In most states there is usually some kind of governing body, like the athletic commission or the boxing commission for that state, and what I understand is its job is to oversee the operations of the event from the ground all the way up," he said. "Safety of the fighter is the No. 1 concern, so most states that have some kind of governing body require some kind of blood work or something that shows the individual is healthy."
Penick's Analysis: This is why states like New York need to lift the ban on the sport and take it under regulation. There needs to be medical personnel on site for fighters, there needs to be oversight on their medical health before and after fights with blood tests, CT scans, MRIs for those that suffer knockout losses, etc. This death, while tragic, is far from an indictment of the sport. It's a freak thing that may have happened whether Jensen fought or not; aneurysm's can happen out of the blue, unfortunately. But it does raise the need to have regulation in place wherever the sport is going to be taking place.
Article updated as event was mistakenly listed as in Iowa. The event took place in South Dakota

UFC 148: Urijah Faber felt confused, initially disrespected by Dana White's opponent switch games
Though Barao was the name that made sense for most observers, White wanted to keep an element of surprise on the proceedings, meaning he flat out lied to Faber and Barao - as well as Ivan Menjivar and Brad Pickett - as to who would actually be the opponent. In fact, until the announcement was made on the live show, Faber was being told the opponent would be Menjivar, with Menjivar, Pickett, and Barao all being told they may be flown to Las Vegas for the announcement.
It was an attempt to keep the real opponent a secret to break on the show, an attempt that didn't have much of a point with that particular episode clocking the worst ratings in series history. Not to mention the fact that word had broken online of Barao's signed contract days before the show. Ultimately, Faber didn't understand White's rationale on how the situation played out.
"I thought Dana was kind of being a weirdo," Faber said in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "He didn't need to lie to me about anything."
"I felt disrespected at first, but then I realized there's no reason to dwell on stupid stuff. I don't know what [White's] motivation was for [lying], really. I thought I was going to fight Barao at first, and I would have liked to continue to think that so I could game-plan for that. This is a big fight for me. There's a lot at stake."
Penick's Analysis: This is the age of immediate information, and there was no way to hold this announcement out until the Friday show without it being common knowledge. Perhaps if there were a number of truly legitimate options it would have been a different story, but in this case, Barao was always the right pick. Faber knew it the day Dominick Cruz got injured, and to string him along by saying something other than that was pretty pointless. Especially when he had to make the effort to lie to several fighters. He brought up the hopes of Menjivar and Pickett, and confused the issue for Barao and Faber. Ultimately the right fight got booked, but it was a dumb and meaningless game to play considering the proximity to the fight and the fact that it wound up leaking out days before anyway.

UFC Champ Jon Jones pleads guilty to DWI charge in New York
The charge stems from his May 19 arrest, which came in the early morning hours of that Saturday morning when he crashed his Bentley into a pole. There was a secondary charge of making an improper turn that was dismissed during Tuesday's hearing.
According to the report, Binghamton City Court Judge Daniel L. Seiden suspended Jones' license immediately, and told him he'll need to undergo an alcohol abuse and dependency evaluation.
Jones will appear in court again on June 19. The maximum sentence for a DWI conviction in New York is up to one year in jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.
Penick's Analysis: The guilty plea likely comes about with a plea bargain on his sentence, and Jones almost assuredly will not actually face jail time. He'll have some sort of fine to pay, and will have some other conditions to his ultimate sentence, but jail time more than likely not be a part of it.

A lightweight bout between Rafaello Oliveira and Yoislandy Izquierdo is headed to UFC 148 on July. Mundus Sports Management, who represent Izquierdo, announced the bout recently.
Oliveira needs a win badly, as he holds just a 1-4 mark inside the Octagon, including two straight losses since returning to the UFC.
Izquierdo hopes to bounce back from a loss in his UFC debut, which came against Reza Madadi by submission at UFC on Fuel 2 in Sweden last month.

UFC 146 Results: Stefan Struve submits Lavar Johnson in just over a minute
In a fight that likely surprised no one, Stefan Struve submitted Lavar Johnson on Saturday night to kick off the pay-per-view card at UFC 146.
Johnson - who fought earlier this month at UFC on Fox 3, knocking out Pat Barry - took this bout on just eight days notice, and he tried to make it his fight early. He pressed Struve to the cage and tried to set up his heavy handed attack, but Struve wouldn't let that happen.
Instead, Struve pulled guard against the cage, and quickly set up a tight armbar. Johnson had little defense for the hold, and tapped almost immediately. Of Johnson's six career losses, five of them have come by submission.
The 24-year-old Struve picked up his fifth win in his last six fights, and is now 8-3 in 11 appearances in the UFC.

Dana White: Strikeforce not going anywhere, Gilbert Melendez "will fight again on Showtime"
Not so fast, says UFC President Dana White.
"Strikeforce is not going anywhere," White said in an interview with Ron Kruck for HDNet's Inside MMA. "Strikeforce is performing very well for Showtime. They love the business, it's not going anywhere."
Furthermore, Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez isn't going anywhere, either. Despite complaints of his level of opposition and a lack of motivation fighting said opposition, Melendez will remain in Strikeforce for the time being.
"Gilbert Melendez is a huge star over there," White said. "He's their guy. He just won again, and he will fight again on Showtime."
As for who Melendez will face next, or whether there's any possibility of an opponent being brought over from the UFC, White simply left the door open for anything.
"We'll see, I don't know who he's going to fight next, but anything is possible," he said. "We'll see what happens."
Penick's Analysis: Showtime must have some real lowered expectations, and Zuffa must be alright with much lower live audiences and gates for Strikeforce if they're considering the first half of the year as "performing very well." It's been passable, sure, but "very well" seems like more than an optimistic outlook on things. White continues to leave the door open for a UFC opponent moving over for Melendez, but it's seemed pretty clear that no one in the UFC is interested in moving over to Strikeforce. Where they go from here remains to be seen, but it would still be surprising for a lot of people if Strikeforce is still around this time next year.

Bryce Harper checks out UFC on Fuel 3
On Monday, Washington Nationals phenom Bryce Harper hit his first major-league home run. Tuesday night, he checked out the UFC on Fuel 3 fights and got to take a picture with UFC Octagon Girl/Playboy cover girl Brittney Palmer. It's a pretty good time to be Bryce Harper.
Palmer, who was on the cover of the February 2012 Playboy, quickly shot down any rumors that might get started from the picture. After gossip blogger Terez Owens wrote that the two had "coupled" up, she tweeted, "Watch your wording, buddy!"
After Harper was intentionally hit by Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels, it made sense for him to take in some cagefights. The pros showed him how to throw a punch, and that may prove valuable when the Nationals head to Philly next week.

Injured champ Dominick Cruz says rival Urijah Faber will only fight for ?No. 1 contender?s belt?
A downcast Dominick Cruz said Wednesday that he'll be back better than ever from the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered last week that forced cancellation of his bantamweight title defense on July 7 against rival Urijah Faber, that was to be the co-main event of UFC 148 in Las Vegas.
Cruz, the UFC bantamweight champion, was sparring when he injured the knee. The ACL tear was diagnosed on Sunday in Las Vegas following an MRI. Cruz said the swelling needs to decrease before he can proceed with the surgery.
"It was a normal day in practice," Cruz told Cagewriter. "I went for a weird trip and it folded my knee. There was a really loud pop and I was kind of in denial the rest of the night. The next day, I went in and got an MRI. I got the results on Sunday and by Monday, the news was out."
On Tuesday on Fuel TV, UFC president Dana White said that Faber would fight an opponent to be named at UFC 148 for the interim belt. Cruz will fight the winner when he's healed. Cruz said recovery time is six to nine months, which will likely mean it will be at least 14 months between fights for him. He last fought in October when he defeated Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision.
White didn't release names, but Faber did later on the show.
Dominick's been out since his last fight and has had several injuries. I think I'll be fighting Renan Barao, Ivan Menjivar or maybe Michael McDonald.
He'll carry a belt around, should he wins, and that will undoubtedly gall Cruz. There is no love lost between the two and they were paired as coaches on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter as a way to take advantage of the heat between them.
If Faber wins at UFC 148, he'll be the interim champion, but Cruz said that won't mean much.
"First of all, it's not like Faber is a lock to beat whoever they put him again," Cruz said. "If he gets it -- and that's a big if -- he won't be carrying around the championship belt. I am the champion and I have the belt. He'll have a No. 1 contender's belt.
"If he has that, big deal. You have to beat the champ to be the champion and he won't have beaten the champion. It's no guarantee he'll win no matter who he fights, but regardless of what happens, I hope he's happy running around with a No. 1 contender's belt, if he gets it."
Cruz said the only time he thinks of the injury is when he does interviews, which forces him to relieve the bad moment. But he said while it will hurt financially, he'll make it OK.
"I live humbly for this reason exactly," Cruz said. "Every fighter lives and dies by his own body. If you're a Trophy Truck driver and the truck breaks down, there is no season. As fighters, our bodies are our Trophy Trucks. This is a minor setback, but I live humbly knowing a situation like this could occur."
