Nick Diaz to fight NSAC ruling in court, wants Anderson Silva bout in UFC return

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DiazNick_GG180_30.jpg
After losing a decision to Carlos Condit in February, a frustrated Nick Diaz stated in the cage that he was done with MMA and would be walking away from the sport. Few expected that "retirement" to stick, and indeed a rematch with Condit was proposed.

Then Diaz had to deal with an entirely different set of issues, as he tested positive for marijuana metabolites, a failed test that set off months of back and forth, legal finagling, and ultimately led to a year long suspension and one of the biggest fines in the history of the sport from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

With his future in limbo, he's been relatively quiet, but his manager Cesar Gracie released a big update on Diaz's future at GracieFighter.com. In that statement, Gracie revealed that Diaz is currently going through the Nevada court system to fight his year long suspension and fine, and said unequivocally that Diaz will fight again.

"This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back to the cage. Nick Diaz will return," Gracie wrote. "To address the NSAC suspension, I will say that we have appealed to the courts and if things go our way, it will be plausible that Nick could return as early as sometime at the end of this year."

"For too long NSAC bureaucrats have acted with malicious incompetence towards the fighters. We will challenge them in court."

Whenever he's able to return, Diaz hopes to step right into big fights. With Georges St-Pierre currently locked in for a bout against Condit, Diaz is looking out of his division for his next challenge.

"As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights 'that matter.' Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere," Gracie wrote. "He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge."

"Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catch weight," Gracie continued. "Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185 lbs to face the Champ."

"I will be meeting with Dana next Monday August 6 to discuss this and other issues. If you appreciate Nick?s fighting style, please let Dana know that you want Nick back ASAP."

Penick's Analysis: A Diaz-Silva fight would be interesting, that's for sure, but I don't know that Diaz matches up well with the greatest fighter in UFC history. His return to action isn't surprising, nor is his decision to fight the NSAC's ruling in court. It was a farcical procedure that they put him through, and with them standing as judge, jury, and executioner with minds made up before his arguments were made, he may have a case if he gets to bring it to court. If that happens, there is a potential for him to return before February of next year, and depending on how the timing works out the UFC may be more interested in Diaz fighting Silva than some of the other options. That's not necessarily true, but it's a possibility. At any rate, Diaz will be back in the Octagon at some point in the future.

Daniel Cormier to fight Frank Mir in Strikeforce this fall

By: Rich Hansen, MMATorch Columnist

MirFrank_180_18.jpg
In a report by John Morgan of USA Today Sports, Dana White revealed that Cormier's next opponent will be UFC stalwart Frank Mir. In Morgan's report, Dana White was quoted as saying, "There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense. The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the (Strikeforce Heavyweight) Grand Prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

As recently as last week, Cormier was rumored to facing former UFC and Affliction fighter Tim Sylvia. Those rumors were quickly shot down by White. The fight between Cormier and Mir figures to be a much more heavily anticipated fight by fight fans.

Mir's presence in Strikeforce will be for just this one cross-promotion super-fight as Strikeforce is still slated to close out their heavyweight division after this fight. According to Morgan's Twitter account, the fight between Cormier and Mir will not take place on the September 29 show in Sacramento, but is tentatively slated for a Strikeforce event in October or November.

ROUNDTABLE: If Chris Weidman fights Anderson Silva next, who has the best case as next No. 1 contender with a Fall win?

BispingMichael_180_31.jpg
If Chris Weidman gets the next shot at Anderson Silva, who has the best case for a title shot after that with a win this fall?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

It depends on what fights they make. It looks like they're going to make Alan Belcher vs. Vitor Belfort (advantage Belcher) in Rio (um, never mind, advantage Belfort), and we already know that Michael Bisping will be decisioning Brian Stann in September. I think the way this plays out is that Belfort and Bisping will wind up being the co-main event behind Silva vs. Weidman on Super bowl Weekend, with the winner facing Silva (or Weidman) in the summer of 2013.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I don't think there is a "best case," but you could probably make a good argument for a lot of guys. I think if Michael Bisping were to beat Brian Stann in an impressive manner, that would be a good way to go. You give Bisping his title shot and let him do the hyping for the fight. Unless someone comes out of left field, that's probably your best shot for an exciting fight.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

The easiest and most decisivie person would be Michael Bisping, if not a newcomer to the division in Rashad Evans. Bisping would get it before Evans with a win over Brian Stann, but Evans could get one notch under him and then move immediately into a title fight with Silva. I still think Bisping will get it next, but if Evans does drop, don't be surprised to see Evans scoot in front of Bisping.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

This is a very hard question, because Anderson Silva has beaten so many of the top fighters at 185. If you look at the top ten middleweights right now, Vitor Belfort, Tim Boetsch, and Michael Bisbing are the only sensible names. From that small list, Michael Bisping may have the best possibility of a sellable fight for the UFC. If Bisbing gets past Brian Stann, he might get a title shot. We can never forget it is not always about who is most deserving of the fight, but who can sell the most pay-per-views.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

If Weidman does in fact receive the next shot against Anderson Silva, the people with the best cases are Michael Bisping or Brian Stann by a long shot. It's very easy to say here you go Weidman, do what you can against the Spider, but there's no guarantee thats the fight they will chose to put together either. 185 does not have a lot of solid contenders left since Silva has already beaten most of them, but how everything unfolds should tell us the way UFC sees the lay of the land, and it will be an interesting year for the whole weight class.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

In MMA, there are guys who need to win more fights than others to stand out. Alan Belcher is one of those guys, Brian Stann (because of how he was dominated by Chael Sonnen) is one of those guys and Tim Boetsch is one of those guys.

Vitor Belfort and Michael Bisping can both be fast tracked to a title shot with one win over a good name, and I think Bisping gets the nod just because people would love to see him get beat up by Anderson Silva. Belfort was already devastated by Anderson in a fashion so spectacular that there's no reason for a rematch to be put together anytime soon.
